How To Make a Pin Board for Under $50

We have been working on our home office for what feels like a year - in fact, it might actually have been a year since we set out on this adventure. I knew the first thing I wanted to do was build large pin boards. The pin board will be less than $50 if you already have a drill, hammer, wood clamps, and staple gun. If you need to invest in these tools, you might go over the $50 budget.

Step One

Visualize the size of your pin board(s). The best way to do this is by marking out the pin board(s) with painters tape. We decided two boards would fit our space, and wanted 6'x2'.

Step Two

Gather your supplies (this is for ONE 6'x2' pin board) :

  • 1/5 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. Hardwood Plywood Underlayment Specialty Panel

    • Most hardware stores will cut the plywood for you. If you are skilled with a saw, you can cut it down yourself.

  • 4 - pine 2x4x8ft. Really look through these! You want them to be as straight as possible. Again, either have them cut to size, or have a saw to cut them yourself. I did this project with my dad, and he brought a few extra to make sure we had straight options.

  • 3" wood screws - you will need a minimum of 6, but they are good to have on hand.

  • 1/2" basic hardware nails. I like to have this kit on hand for all of my projects.

  • Wood Glue

  • Wood Clamps

  • Hammer

  • Drill + drill bits

  • Cork Tiles : there are a number of options, from a cork roll to larger sheets. We found the cork tiles to be the easiest to work with because there is not cutting involved.

Step Three

Measure out your frame. With such a tall frame, we added support in the middle to keep it square.

Step Four

We pre-drilled holes in our posts to make it a little easier for the screws. Add a small amount of wood glue to your posts where they will touch. Clamp your frame, measure to make sure it is square, and drill in the screws.

Step Five

Attach the plywood front with your nails. We put a nail in the four corners of the plywood, and then worked our way around the border.

Step Six

Our cork tiles came with self-adhesive tiles. If you don't have self-adhesive tiles, super glue or a hot glue will work. Secure your cork board to the plywood.

Step Seven

Place your fabric. At this point you are going to be seriously wondering why you started this project. I promise, it's worth it and you are almost there.

How to place your fabric :

  • You can use any fabric. I found some durable cotton on sale in an off-white color. With pin boards, if you are going to use this for color or visual needs - it's best to keep it neutral in color.

  • Use your staple gun to secure the fabric. Start on each end, and pull as hard as you can to ensure the fabric is tight.

  • Work your way to the corners, and fold so the fabric is tight against the frame.

Step Eight

Hand your pin board(s) and start pinning! We painted our walls Magnolia Olive Green while finishing this project.

We hope to finish our office room in the next few weeks. We just need to find the perfect desk, and side chairs.

What will you place on your pin boards? We dream of starting our own clothing company, so our pin boards are inspiration for this project.

Happy pinning!
